Sielmat (Manipur): The much-awaited 5th Hmar Martyrs’ Badminton Tournament commenced on Monday (May 8) with competitors from different corners of Churachandpur district.
The opening ceremony was held at Lalhmasuon Joute Memorial Hall in Rengkai (6 PM local time). Upa Lalchelzing Zote opened the sporting event with a prayer and this was followed by an introduction of dignitaries present and a welcome address from Sinlung Badminton Association Secretary Immanuel Pulamte.
President of SBA Lalramruot Parate gave a report of the SBA history after which silent prayer was observed for the departed martyrs who have laid down their lives for the cause of the Hmar tribe.
Rev. Joseph R. Joute closed the opening programme with a prayer.
Soon after, exhibition matches between invited dignitaries and intellectuals were held. This was followed by the real competition. In between the matches, celebrated singer Ms Christina Shakum enthralled the audience with her special numbers.
The 5th Hmar Martyrs Badminton Tournament will be played between May 8-13, 2017 and 87 competitors from various tribes in district haves registered for the games.
The tournament is organised by HMARTOB, organiser of the ongoing Hmar Martyrs Football Trophy 2017 at Saikawt in the run-up to the upcoming Hmar Martyrs’ Day observation on May 16. The Hmar tribe in Manipur observe this day every year as remembrance day for those who laid down their lives for the cause of the Hmar movement in Mizoram.
