Global Council of Indian Christians writes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi over food choice

Aizawl (zoramobserver.com): A Bangalore-based Global Council of Indian Christians on Monday appealed the Centre to dispel apprehension among various sections of people in India regarding choice of food and religious belief which came as a result of constant harassment, blatant violation of human rights on all fronts and needless interference in the personal lives of citizens with impunity by various Hindutva protagonists.

In a memorandum submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Global Council of Indian Christians said that though the constitution of India enables all its citizens, regardless of their caste, creed, religion, region or language, to grow unhindered and bloom itself into a powerful, law abiding and secular nation in the world, there has been a new trend and a kind of new tendency among certain sections of people in our country in recent days to ignore all these matters of universal significance and of international importance.

“That section of people seem to take great pride in throwing all the civilized norms to the wind, especially the pressing need to keep up with the rest of the world in its forward march of development and progress, and concentrate upon only such things with which they can mesmerize the gullible and take them along with them for a few more years and make them dance according to their systematically set music,” the memorandum said, adding this will certainly undo all that we have been able to do, ever since freeing ourselves from the foreign yoke 7 decades ago.

The council said that the interference in the food habits of the people as a whole, and forcibly imposing only such items of food of their choice upon the rest of the people in the country is bound to create a havoc in the country in course of time, as there will be only losers, and no winners in the end, by which time, perhaps very tragically, everything may have gone beyond our control.

“Harassment of certain sections of people under the guise of stopping forcible conversion to other religions also seem to take a very tragic turn in different parts of the country wherein unsocial elements, taking the law into their own hands, resort to all kinds of criminal acts under the cover of the ruling party’s protection and the religious leaders’ concurrence to their misdeeds,” the memorandum signed by president of the council Dr. Sajan George also said.

It alleged that the more tragic side of the whole story seems to be the elected representatives too and also the ministers themselves making irresponsible statements, covertly and sometimes even overtly supporting such criminal misdeeds by irresponsible lumpen elements, which would ultimately drag the good name of this great country to their own miserable level.

Also, it becomes much more tragic when the four pillars of democracy – the legislative, the executive, the judiciary, and the media are deviating from the mandate ingrained in the tapestry of democracy, it added.

Taking into consideration all these factors and recent unpleasant developments in the country, the Christian council appealed to Prime Minister Modi to take strong and immediate measures to arrest this new trend that tends to look like the development of a theocratic sort of a society in the making and said that such an attempt should be firmly fought by all men of good will, cutting across their caste, creed or religion.
