- ExtraTorrent Alternatives Emerge
The world’s most popular torrent site ExtraTorrent, next only to Pirated Bay when it was operational, has been shut down permanently.
The sudden decision of SaM, which/who operates the file sharing site, took many by surprised as there was no prior announcement in this regard.
With this development, torrent lovers are forced to say goodbye to another popular brand after similar sites like KickassTorrents and Torrentz.eu were forced to shut down under pressure from various countries.
The site was officially shutdown on May 17, 2017, without giving any explanation.
Thousands of the site users were greeted with this message on the homepage:
“ExtraTorrent has shut down permanently. ExtraTorrent with all mirrors goes offline. We permanently erase all data. Stay away from fake ExtraTorrent websites and clones. Thx to all ET supporters and torrent community. ET was a place to be.”
The official mirrors are also gone:
There were no working mirrors (eve unofficial ones) at the time of this report. This clearly shows that there appears to be a serious attempt to take down the site by some big entertainment companies.
Are there Best alternatives to ExtraTorrent?
Extratorrent maybe gone forever, but there various torrent sites like ThePirateBay.org, Rarbg (https://www.rarbg.to/index8.php), YTS (https://yts.ag/), and 1337x.
Meanwhile, on May 19, 2017, some users of the site claimed that they were still able to continue with their downloads of files via torrent clients like BitTorrent and uTorrent using the torrent files they had downloaded earlier.
Earlier, only some countries blocked the site, but later the operators shut it down for all.
ExtraTorrent was launched back in November 2006 and attained popularity by having its own set of features. While, no one is pretty sure about the actual owner of the site, it is suspected to be operated by a group of people.
It is also not yet clear whether the site received any legal notice from entertainment industry groups as there were sections on Hollywood and Foreign movies. Fans who shared their views on Twitter said that the site could be under pressure from hosting companies and domain services providers as several domain extensions were used to operate the site over its lifetime.
Some of the popular torrent sites that were recently shutdown include KickassTorrents, Torrentz.eu, TorrentHound and What.cd.
