Aizawl (www. zoramobserver.com): As much as 25,895 units of blood have been donated in Mizoram during the fiscal 2016 to 2017 and of this 83 per cent was given under voluntary donation, Association for Voluntary Blood Donation (AVBD) general secretary C Lalnunnema said during the observance of National voluntary blood donation day in Aizawl on Tuesday.
According to Lalnunnema, voluntary blood donation began in Mizoram since 1993 and during this year only 1.79 per cent of the total units of blood donated in the state was given under voluntary donation. “The percentage of voluntary blood donation has kept increasing and as of now it has crossed 80 per cent sometime registering more than 90 per cent,” he said.
During the fiscal 2016-2017, a total of 25,895 units of blood have been donated in Mizoram and out of this 83 per cent was under voluntary donation, Lalnunnema said.
During the same period, the total units of blood donated by youth fellowship of different churches was 8,416 and 3,986 units by students of different colleges, 1,988 units by volunteers of YMA, and 2,308 units by different organizations, while individual donor donated 5,140 units of blood, he added.
Organised jointly by Mizoram States AIDS Control Society (MSACS) and Association for Voluntary Blood Donation (AVBD), National Voluntary Blood Donation Day was observed on Tuesday in different parts of Mizoram such as in Aizawl, Lunglei and Serchhip during which over 200 volunteers donated their blood.
In Aizawl, the observance of National Voluntary Blood Donation Day was held at J Thankima College under the aegis of MSACS, AVBD and J Thankima College NSS. Health principal director D F Lallianhlira attended the event as chief guest.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr F Lallianhlira expressed happiness for the growing consciousness and willingness among the youths to donate blood on voluntary basis.
He asked the students to take care of their life style, maintain healthy life and to come forward for more voluntary donation.
Apart from Dr F Lallianhlira, MSACS Project Director Dr Lalmalsawmi Sailo and J Thankima College Principal Dr. C Lalremruata also addressed the function. During the observance of National Voluntary Blood Donation Day in Aizawl, students of J Thankima College comprising 127 males and 31 females donated blood for Aizawl Civil Hospital.
In Lunglei, National Voluntary Blood Donation Day was observed at Lunglei Higher Secondary School in which 32 males and 26 females donated blood for Lunglei Civil Hospital.
Whereas in Serchhip, the observance of National Voluntary Blood Donation Day was held at Serchhip District Hospital (JN Hospital) under the aegis of AVBD and JN Hospital during which volunteers of Serchhip Darnam Branch donated 33 units of blood for the district hospital.
