Aizawl: Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), the apex student body of Mizoram, on Monday strongly slammed the Myanmar Army for the atrocities committed to civilians of Kachin ethnic tribe in Myanmar, who are fleeing their homes and trapped in forests amid fighting between the Myanmar military and an ethnic armed group.
Sources said that more than 3,000 civilians belonging to Myanmar’s Kachin state have been driven from their homes by recent clashes in the long-running conflict between the Myanmar Army and the Kachin Independence Army (KIA).
A statement issued by the student body said that a meeting of elected office bearers of the association was held on Monday. The meeting blamed the highhandedness of Myanmar Army in launching air strike and artillery fire on the civilians, who are being trapped in forests due to the arm conflicts.
The meeting alleged that the Myanmar government is not allowing relief aids for the civilians and blocked all relief measures from other sources.
“Kachin communities are one of the Mizo tribes and the high handedness of Myanmar Army and laxity of the Myanmar government to address their problem is an insult to the entire Mizo nation,” the student body said.
The meeting said that many civilians including children and elderly men and women and pregnant women fled their homes and are being trapped in forest due to arm conflict between Myanmar Army and KIA.
The Myanmar government has not only launched air strike and artillery fire on the civilians, but also refused to provide relief aids to them, the student body said, adding the government also blocked all relief measures from NGOs.
It strongly asked the Myanmar government to rescue the trapped civilians, address their problems and stop using military forces against them if it considers the people of Kachin state as it own subject.
The OB meeting of MZP further blamed the incident on 23 May in which a school girl was allegedly molested by a non-tribal guy.
It demanded the state government to give stringent punishment to the culprit.
