Aizawl, June 5: In a tragic incident, at least 10 people, including 5 minors , were killed and 4 others injured when a semi-pucca building housed by two families was swept away by massive landslide triggered by heavy rainS in Lunglawn area of south Mizoram’s Lunglei town, police said on Tuesday.
The incident occurred around 6:40 pm on Monday night when the occupants were about to go for church service, they said, adding that the landslide was believed to be caused by heavy rains that lashed Lunglei town on Monday evening.
The building belonged to Vanlalpeka who live with his six other family members on the first floor, while the ground floor was housed by his father-in-law Thatlina, who lives with his wife and five other relatives. All the seven occupants of the ground floor were killed in the landslide, while three members of Vanlalpeka’s family were also killed in the same incident.
Altogether 14 people were residing in the building, police said.
All the bodies have been recovered on Tuesday after rescue operation launched by a team of disaster rapid force, personnel of Assam Rifles and BSF, police and local volunteers, they said.
According to Vanlalpeka, the building was located by roadside and they heard a bang when they are preparing for church service.
He said that he threw out two of his children from the window when his house was swept away by the landslide which occurred of a sudden.
Four persons were rescued from the landslide, police said, adding that one of them suffered injuries.
Vanlalpeka’s wife Lalchawiliani (29), his son Peter Lalkroshchhuanga (7) and his father H.C Aipianga were laid to rest on Tuesday afternoon, while the bodies of Thatlina (67) and his wife Darpawngi (66), Cindy A. Lalhlunmawii (4), Remlalfamkima (14) and Laldinpari (32) were brought to their native place Bungtlang south.
Lalrammawii (13) and Christina Lalnunhrili (10) were sent to their village Chawnghu in Lawngtlai district.
State disaster management rehabilitation minister C. Ngunlianchunga visited Lunglei and condoled the victim on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the state government announced ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to the victims’ kin.
