Aizawl (zoramobserver.com): Various Chakma organisations including All India Chakma Students’ Union (AICSU), All India Chakma Social Forum (AICSF) and Rashtriya Chakma Tribal Sangh (RCTS), welcomed the resignation of Dr Buddha Dhan Chakma, Minister of State of Sericulture and Fisheries.
A statement issued by AICSU said that it strongly welcome the resignation of Dr. BD Chakma in protest against the alleged racial discrimination.
The statement also added that Dr. BD Chakma tendered resignation in protest against the against the denial of medical seats to four Chakma students who have qualified in the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) for studying MBSS under Mizoram state quota.
The AICSU also alleged that Chakma students have faced utter discrimination in Mizoram.
“Dr BD Chakma’s resignation is a defining moment in Chakma history. The Chakmas have been facing a very hard time due to racial discrimination against them by the State. His resignation has sent a strong message against discrimination,” said AICSU president Dilip Kanti Chakma.
“No other Chakma politician has resigned against such systematic discrimination. Therefore, it is historic. We are not against the Mizos but we must also not be blatantly discriminated,” stated Uttam Chakma, President of the RCTS.
Dr BD Chakma is the lone minister from Chakma community in the Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla Cabinet. He resigned on Monday over denial of admission to four Chakma students who have qualified in NEET.
The resignation of Chakma was accepted by Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla on Tuesday and was referred to Governor Nirbhay Sharma for final approval.
