280 dead, 3318 arrested in drug related cases in Mizoram since 2010

Aizawl ( At least 280 people have died due to drug abuse and 3318 people arrested under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act since 2010 to July this year, a senior official of state Excise & Narcotics department said on Monday.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference here, Excise & Narcotics Department Commissioner Ngurchungnunga Sailo said of the 3318 arrested, 2666 have been booked and cases were registered against them under NDPS Act.

As per the record maintained by state Excise & Narcotics Department, Ngurchungnunga Sailo said officials of the department have seized 20 kgs of heroin, 24 kgs of opium, 1777.88 kgs of ganja (cannabis) and 1,46,730 tablets of Methemphatamine during a period from 2010 to July 2017.

The department also registered 280 drug related death since 2010 to July 2017, he said.

The commissioner said that state Excise & Narcotics Department used to dispose the seized drugs after court order as per the directive of the Supreme Court.

He said that when drugs of different types like Heroin, Proxyvon, Methemphatamine and others were seized, they used to be produced before court after which the official destroyed as per the court order.

He said that he did not come across official involved in hiding or stealing the seized drugs before disposal.

The commissioner said that on several occasions, drugs smugglers or owners tried to bribe officials of Excise & Narcotics and especially when Pseodoephadrine were seized, the drugs owner often tried to take back their materials by offering money to the department officials.

Citing that the Supreme Court is very meticulous in disposal of drugs as per the existing law, officials of Excise & Narcotics Department said the seized drugs are sealed right after the seizure and the department does not keep it for long before being produced in the court. After the court judgment, the seized drugs are disposed or destroyed by Drugs Disposal Committee constituted by Excise & Narcotics department, they said.
