Parvachawm (Manipur) : The mortal remains of Pi Lalruotmawi was laid to rest today at her native village here after volunteers retrieved her body during a six-day search operation.
Pi Lalruotmawi was swept away by Tuivai River on May 29 evening. A massive joint operation was launched under the leadership of local Hmar Youth Association and Mizoram’s Young Mizo Youth Association. After navigating the swollen rivers for six days, volunteers from Khawlien located her dead body. It was then taken to Parvachawm last night and even as Pherzawl District officials requested the villagers to wait for the Deputy Commissioner to reach the hamlet, the last rites were performed since there was no way to keep the keep the body for another night.
Sources said that the state government has promised to release a compensation for the deceased family. Zoram Observer, however, cannot confirm this as there has been no official announcement from the state government.
The district officials have been severely criticised on social media for “not helping” the villagers and volunteers during the search operation.
