Miss America 2020: Fans are upset a woman of color did not get to take home the crown

People had made up their mind that this was the year for women of color after most of the major pageants competitions were won by black women. Many had their eyes set on Miss America 2020 as they thought this would be another competition where a woman of color would take home the crown.

Contesting against 51 contestants, the top three finalists included Victoria Hill from Georgia, Simone Esters from Missouri and Camille Schrier from Virginia. Miss America 2020 was won by Schrier while Hill became the 1st runner-up. Unfortunately, Esters was the second runner-up in the competition.

People had their hopes set on her as they thought she was the last hope for another woman of color to be crowned. Unfortunately, people did not get to see that. During her social impact initiative around, Esters spoke about the need of having a mentor in one’s life. Her social impact initiative, ”Leave your MARK’ was started by her because she thought that having a mentor in her life changed the way she looked at life.

Growing up with a single mother and living with her grandparents, Esters recalled that she never had anyone to guide her or look up to. However, it changed when she met her mentor. Esters revealed that she believes anyone could head towards positivity if they have someone to guide them and through her mentorship she hopes to do just that.

While everyone was happy with the answer, the judges thought that the other two contestants were better. Many took to social media to express their disappointment. One wrote, “That miss America pageant was a joke clearly they couldn’t have another black woman crowned because Missouri def was the best choice out of the top 5.”

Some were not happy with the news of her elimination as the comment read, “The black candidate for Miss America just got let go. the last 2 are white. I’m pissed. this wasn’t supposed to end like this.” Another echoed similar thoughts and wrote, “Chile I guess Miss America said “all the Misses can’t be black girls” no but in all seriousness, I think we can all agree that Miss Missouri was a way better choice than Miss Virginia.”

This year, Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss USA, Miss Teen USA were all won by women of color.
