The 18-year-old agreed a move to Old Trafford over the summer but has remained in Italy until he was granted a work permit, while Atalanta had hoped to persuade United to allow the youngster to remain at the club on loan until the end of the season.

Diallo has now been granted an Italian passport, while United intend to integrate him into the first-team immediately, and official confirmation of the move appears imminent.

On Sunday Diallo posted a picture on Instagram from a private plane headed for the Italian capital, with the teenager believed to be in Rome to complete the final paperwork he needs.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed that Diallo’s move was nearing completion last week and, although he sees the youngster as a player for the future, he is eager to see him first hand in training.

‘We have had all the paperwork, I can’t see any obstacles. He’s coming,’ said Solskjaer on Friday.

‘I hope very soon he will be with us. I’m very excited about bringing him in. I think he’s shown a few times his qualities.

‘Of course he has to learn to play in England, that’s a different level of football. We’ll give him time to develop and to express himself.

‘Apart from that, I’m not really thinking too much on what we’re going to do with players. Of course, we’re always working long-term. That’s the big thing. We have targets we need long-term for the club.’
