MCI recommends for medical college in Mizoram, classes likely in August

Aizawl: Mizoram will soon have medical college as Medical Council of India (MCI) has sent recommendation to the Centre for approval, chief minister Lal Thanhawla said on Friday.

“The MCI has submitted recommendation to the Ministry of Health for establishment of medical college in Mizoram on Thursday. Medical college will soon be established at state referral hospital at Falkawn,” the chief minister said while addressing a political session here on Friday.

He said that the establishment of medical college to be named Mizoram Institute of Medical Education and Research (MIMER) will be a milestone in the history of Mizoram.

Speaking to The Telegraph, MIMER director Dr. L. Fimate said the state government has fulfilled all the requirement set by the MCI for establishment of medical college and overcame the various hurdles for Letter of Permission (LOP).

“MCI has decided to recommend us for LOP. It is all because of the commitment and hard works of the officials with blessing from God. Let us continue to pray for the healthy birth and luxuriant growth of MIMER,” he said.

He said that LOP is expected to be obtained from the Ministry of Health within this month and classes of first batch will be commenced likely in August.

According to the director, the proposed medical college would have initial intake of 100 seats out of which 15 per cent is reserved for central pool and 10 per cent for Non-Resident Indian (RNI).

Health Minister Lal Thanzara had earlier told the assembly that the state government has received Rs 102.02 crore from the Centre for setting up its first and only medical college- Mizoram Institute of Medical Education and Research.

He added that state’s matching share of Rs 11.34 crore was also received for the purpose.

The proposed medical college will be established at state referral hospital at Falkawn village, about 16 km east of Aizawl.
