18 youths arrested in Mizoram for opposing transfer of police officer

Aizawl: At least 18 youth leaders belonging to Lunglei Thalai Pawl were arrested on Saturday after they staged demonstration opposing the transfer of Lunglei district superintendent of police J. Lalṭhafamkima by the state government.

The state government recently issued an order transferring the SP from Lunglei for a reason undisclosed.

Opposing the transfer order, hundreds of youths staged a demonstration in front of SP office on Friday and Saturday demanding that the SP be not transferred from Lunglei as they were sceptical about an anomaly in transferring the police officer.

The youths were of the view that the police officer was a good man and an upright person, who carried out his duty to the satisfaction of the people, whom he served.

They demanded the state government to reveal the reason as to why the SP has been transferred to AIG (training) in Aizawl.

During a demonstration held in front of SP office in Lunglei, the protesters blocked the police officer from leaving Lunglei town. 18 youth leaders were arrested and detained in police custody after they clashed with Mizoram Armed Police (MAP).

The agitating youths also blamed seven legislators from Lunglei for allegedly failing to raise voice over the dilapidated road condition.

They alleged that the MLAs did not have concern for the welfare of the people and were not taking initiative to improve road condition in the area.

A youth leader said that they will not ignore the MLA, who have no concern for the welfare of the public as regard improving road condition in the area and they will continue to take efforts to ensure that such MLA are given exemplary punishment for being remained inactive.
