Aizawl: Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), a pre-poll electoral alliance formed by seven parties on Monday asked the state government to construct a resting shed at Zophai near Bairabi town of Kolasib district along the Assam-Mizoram border.
Earlier in March, Congress Legislature Party (CPL) passed a resolution stating that the government resolved to construct a resting shed at Zophai.
Addressing to party workers at a party meeting on Monday here, ZPM vice president and spokesperson Vanlalhlana said the state government should honour its promises and construct a resting shed at Zophai as per its resolution.
“The CPL passed a resolution that the state government will construct resting shed at Zophai after several students and journalists were injured in police lathi charge. We demand that the government construct rest shed as per its resolution,” he said.
He said that the construction of resting shed at Zophai along the Assam-Mizoram border has brought unity and solidarity among the people of Mizoram.
Border dispute between Assam and Mizoram arose when activists of Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), state’s apex student body attempted to construct a wooden resting shed at Zophai on the land, as claimed by MZP, donated by former Mizoram Chief Minister late Ch. Chhunga’s wife Lalrothangi in March this year.
The Assam government, on the other hand, claimed that the land falls under Assam.
Several students and journalist were injured when Assam police resorted to lathi charge and firing to disperse the protesting students on 8 and 10 March.
