Aizawl (zoramobserver.com): In Mizoram, which has the highest rate of child abuse in the country, children are not always safe and are at the risk of being sexually abused even in their own home.
Child Welfare Committee (CWC) registered 1,123 child abuse cases during April 2017 to March 2018, including 68 cases pending from the previous year. Of these, sexual abuse was the single largest case, followed by negligence of child, according to workers of State Child Protection Society (MSCPS).
Sexual abuse against children has been on the rise in the state since 2012, they said.
Of the 1,123 child abuse cases registered during last year, Child Welfare Committee disposed 1043 cases and kept 80 cases as pending to be disposed of this year.
According to MSCPS workers, sexual molestation was highest among child abuse cases and most of the accused were either the victim’s relatives or acquaintances. “Children are not safe anywhere in the state as most cases of child sexual abuse were committed by relatives, friends and teachers of the victims,” they said, adding the rate of sexual abuse against children keeps increasing with each year.
During the same period, the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) registered 335 cases including 92 cases pending from the previous year.
Of the 335 cases registered last year, 332 were disposed by the board and 95 was kept pending for the current year.
Theft or burglary tops the JJB’s cases at 190 out of 335, followed by drug abuse.
Child abuse case and juvenile cases were comparatively high in Mizoram due to public awareness that increased reported cases to the CWC and JJB, according to workers of MSCPS.
They said that most of the cases were associated with orphanage child or children without legitimate parents.
