The state cabinet has recently approved the proposal for establishment of adhoc municipalities in five districts in the state, the official said.
He added that adhoc municipalities will be established in Lunglei, Champhai, Kolasib, Serchhip and Mamit. These municipalities will function as adhoc for some years after which they will be upgraded to full fledged municipalities
Lawngtlai distirct and Siaha district in the southern part of the state have been skip from the plan as they are autonomous district headquarters. Lawngtlai is the headquarters of Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) and Chawngte in the same district is the headquarters of Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC). Siaha is the district headquarters of Mara Autonomous District Council (MADC)
Mizoram has only one full fledged municipality that is in Aizawl which is named Aizawl Municipal Corporation.
Meanwhile, People’s Representation for Identity and Status of Mizoram (PRISM) has welcomed the government’s initiative to establish adhoc municipalities in five district headquarters and expressed desire that the municipalities are given real autonomy.
A statement issued by the anti-corruption watchdog turned political party said that separate administration for urban area and rural area is most crucial as rural life is completely different from urban life.
However, municipalities would be meaningless unless they are given autonomy, the statement added.
The party also demanded the state government that all powers and subjects as guaranteed by the constitution be accorded to all municipalities.
