Aizawl (zoramobserver.com): The Mizoram government has strongly condemned and expressed apology for the physical assault perpetrated on a young volleyball player from Manipur, who was taking part at the 26th Mini National Volleyball Championship, concluded on Saturday.
The government’s apology came a day after the Manipur government asked a probe into the physical assault of the player.
Sakil Chesam, a young volleyball player from Manipur was physically assaulted by some miscreants while celebrating their victory against Mizoram. He sustained severe injuries leading to a jawbone fracture.
Mizoram sports minister Zodintluanga in his statement on Tuesday said the people of Mizoram deeply regretted that such incident took place causing physical and mental agony to the young player.
“The Mizoram government has never experienced an incident such as this in the past and is totally shocked to learn that a player from outside the state had unfortunately met with such an accident,” the minister said.
The state government has sincerely condemns the uncivilised conduct of the miscreants and conveys its apology and prayer for the speedy recovery of the victim, Zodintluanga said.
He said that the Mizoram government is committed and resolved that it will do everything in its power that such misconduct is never repeated, and that true sportsman spirit and common brotherhood are always upheld for the unity of one and all.
Chesam was physically assaulted by some miscreants on Saturday, when the victim was celebrating their victory. He is undergoing treatment at Shija Hospital and Research Centre in Imphal.
Manipur youth affairs and sports minister Letpao Haokip on Monday wrote to the Mizoram government asking a probe into the physical assault.
Stating the incident “unfortunate,” Haokip said such unsportsman-like conduct deserved strong condemnation and appropriate action should be taken against the criminals.
