Aizawl: A 25- year-old married man was arrested for hacking a village head to death, police said on Tuesday.
The accused Mandip Chakma, a resident of Silsury village in western Mizoram’s Mamit district under the jurisdiction of West Phaileng Police station, had killed the village council president Sneha Ranjan on Sunday evening after the two engaged in bitter argument over list of job card holders under MGNREGS.
Police said that the village council was having a meeting under the chairmanship of Ranjan on Sunday when Chakma walked in the meeting room and enquired about the list of job card holders, said to have been issued by Mizoram Rural Bank.
Rajan told Chakma to check with the bank manager if he has any doubt. Angered by this, Chakma warned the village head not to argue with him or he will hack him.
Unaware of Chakma carrying a dao, Ranjan challenged him to hack if he dares to do so. Suddenly Chakma then attacked Ranjan and hacked him at his jaw with his dao, which he carried at his back. The victim succumbed to his injuries a few minutes later, police said.
Soon after the incident Chakma escaped from the scene and fled to neighbouring village where he hid till Monday.
According to police, a manhunt was lunched for the culprit soon after his escape. He surrendered before West Phaileng police on Monday, they said.
The accused was taken to Mamit on the same day and is currently at police custody.
