Aizawl, April 26: Along with Tripura and Nagaland, statewide mock exercise on earthquake preparedness was organized in all eight districts of Mizoram to increase awareness as well as equip the citizens to respond appropriately in times of actual disasters.
The exercise was conducted by National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in collaboration with state disaster management and rehabilitation department.
In Aizawl, the mock exercise was started at Aizawl district deputy commissioner office where a siren was blown at 10 am after which rescue operators, task force and officials of various departments rushed to District Emergency Operation Centre (DEOC).
At the DEOC, task force and rescue operators were briefed for emergency preparedness.
Mock exercise was conducted at five incident sites- millennium centre, capital complex, Republic high school & higher secondary school, Sihpui Ramthar Veng and Aizawl civil hospital, besides Treasury Square, Khatla, Saron Tuithiang and Mizofed filling station where drill demonstration was held for evacuation of public in times of cyclone, landslide and fire incident.
The mock exercise was demonstrated by police personnel, staffs of Mizoram Police Radio Organization (MPRO), Fire & Emergency Services, Health & Family Welfare, Civil Aviation, Information &Public Relation (I&PR), PHE, PWD, P&E, Food Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs (FCS&CA), Environment & Forest (E&F) department, and team of Disaster Response Force and National Disaster Response Force.
Chief minister Lal Thanhawla also visited the incident sites and witnessed the mock exercise.
Apart from five earthquake incident sites, relief camp and makeshift hospital were also established for disaster response during the mock drill.
Aizawl district deputy commissioner Dr A Mathumma thanked all departments and stakeholders for cooperation during the exercise. She expressed hope that the mock exercise will bring forth positive results.
The mock exercise on earthquake preparedness was also held in different parts of the state.
