Congress legislator and ex-health minister Lalrinliana Sailo decides to quit

Aizawl: In yet another political development in a poll-bound Mizoram, senior Congress leader and sitting MLA Lalrinliana Sailo has decided to leave the party and also quit as MLA. Speaking to zoramobserver.com, Sailo said he announced his decision of quitting the Congress as well as legislator before the people of his constituency at Khawzawl town on Saturday.

Sailo said that after many days of thought, he finally decided to leave the party and quit as MLA due to the Congress government’s failure to recognize Khawzawl area as a full fledged district and that the Congress Legislature Party did not include him as official candidate for the upcoming assembly poll.

Khawzawl falls under Tuichawng, the constituency Lalrinliana Sailo represents.

Sailo’s decision of leaving Congress came two weeks after Congress vice president and home minister R. Lalzirliana resigned from the cabinet over Congress government’s failure to implement Saitual district which led to his subsequent expulsion from the party.

Sailo said that the people of Tuichawng constituency have been demanding district status since long time back and the Congress government was hesitant to fulfill their demands.

He said that the Congress has no chance of winning Tuichawng constituency as the Mizo National Front (MNF) promised to implement Khawzawl district, which it announced in 2008, if it comes to power after the assembly election.

“I decided to quit as the Congress Legislature Party has looked other candidate to represent my constituency,” he said, adding that he would submit resignation this week.

Asked if he is joining other political party, he said he will decide later.

Meanwhile, sources said that Sailo is likely to switch over to rival party- MNF and will contest from Chalfilh constituency on MNF ticket.

Sailo has been elected from Tuichang for the third consecutive term since 2003.

He was the health minister in Lalthanhawla’s cabinet during 2009 to 2013.

He said he felt nostalgic as he has represented Tuichawng for about 15 years.
