The Haga Hospital is the largest hospital in The Hague, Netherlands. As part of a large renovation and new build extension program, the healthcare facility underwent a signification development. Part of this program was choosing a suitable frameless glass balustrade solution – notably the AMG Frameless Glass Railing range.
AMG were consulted on the project, and designed and installed approximately 560m of frameless glass balustrading in internal areas within the hospital.
Safety was of paramount importance to the installation, and as a result it was designed to a height of 1400mm – far exceeding Building Regulations. This is to prevent people within the hospital from climbing over the balustrade.
The AMG Frameless Glass System complies with various regulations across Europe, including Nederlands Bouwbesluit 2012, French CSTB of the Centre Scientifique et Technique du Bâtiment, German AbP: ‘Allgemeines bauaufsichtliches Prüfzeugnis’ (AbP is a German abbreviation for “General Building Codes Test Certificate”). AMG have tested the system according to UK Building Regulations BS 6180:2011 Barriers in and about Buildings, in close collaboration with its sole distributor Balustrade Components UK.
Another important factor as to the specification of the AMG Glass Railing, was the striking aesthetics of the glass barriers. 17.5mm thick toughened laminated glass is held into position by AMG’s top-mounted base shoe, in an aluminium anodised option. This was curved in areas of the building which traditionally would make it difficult to achieve a seamless finish, but the innovative AMG System is able to create smooth, continuous curved glass balustrading options.
AMG were also asked by the main architect and project developers to create a bespoke solution to fix the glass railings to various internal building elements, for example staircases. Custom-made channels were developed and secured to the building work to house glass panels, which connected them to the frameless glass railing structures.
Elegant brushed stainless steel handrails are used throughout the glass balustrading to provide a sophisticated, modern finish. Different radiuses feature in the internal garden area, located in the pavilion area in the centre of the main building. It was a challenge to match up the different options, but the AMG System is able to accommodate different radiuses in a seamless installation.
Once the renovation and new build program was complete, the Haga Hospital achieved an excellent BREEAM rating. This is considered to be achieved by adopting best practises throughout the build process and only 10% of UK new non-domestic buildings achieve the rating.
The AMG Frameless Glass Railing significantly increases levels of natural light within internal areas of the hospital building. Indeed, the building design means that every room in the hospital has a line of sight to the outside world, whether it is located on the perimeter of the building or not. This greatly increases the levels of natural light and as a result the healing element in the hospital environment, helping patient recovery.
